HOW TO GET TO OXFORD (United Kingdom)

BY PLANE

The two closest airports to Oxford are London Heathrow (LHR) and Birmingham International (BHX).

There is a direct bus from London Heathrow to Oxford. The service is called “The Airline” https://www.theairlineoxford.co.uk/oxford-to-heathrow-bus/ and it runs regularly every 20 or 30 minutes from Terminal 5 and from the Central Bus Station (T1, T2 & T3). T4 is internally connected to T5 and/or to the Central Bus Station.

The journey takes approx. 75 minutes from/to T5 and 85 minutes from/to the Central Bus station. Please consider that in case of heavy traffic, there could be delays.

The Airline Timetable is available here: https://www.theairlineoxford.co.uk/timetables/ (please check the website closer to the conference time, as a summer schedule with increased frequency maybe in place).

The Airline has several stops in Oxford, one of which is next to the Oxford Brookes University Headington Campus, where the Conference takes place.

An open return ticket costs 35£ and can be purchased online or directly from the bus driver, with contactless credit/debit card or paying in cash.

There is a direct train from Birmingham International to Oxford. The journey takes 60 minutes and there is a train every hour.

Train times are available here:  https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/plan-a-journey/ or here https://www.thetrainline.com

The cost of a train ticket varies depending on the time of the day and whether the ticket is for a specific set time or flexible. You can buy the ticket online or at Birmingham International Railway Station (normally, more expensive than online).

Oxford train station is directly connected to the Oxford Brookes University Headington Campus by a local bus (400) and the journey takes approx. 20-25 minutes. Local bus tickets in Oxford can be purchased directly from the bus driver, with contactless credit/debit card or paying in cash.

OTHER AIRPORTS

In terms of direct bus connections, the Airline https://www.theairlineoxford.co.uk/oxford-to-gatwick-bus also operates a direct service from/to London Gatwick (LGW) every hour. The journey takes approximately 150-180 minutes and both Terminal North and South at LGW are served by the Airline.

The Airline Timetable is available here: https://www.theairlineoxford.co.uk/timetables (please check the website closer to the conference time, as a summer schedule with increased frequency maybe in place).

London Luton Airport (LTN) is approx. 100 Km by car from Oxford, but there is no direct connection with public transport.

An option could be reserving online a private car service (taxi or cab) or renting a car. The journey by car takes approx. 70 minutes.

London Stansted (STN) is approx. 160 Km by car from Oxford. There are very few direct buses and the journey lasts approximately 240 minutes.

Unless a person plans to spend a day in London before or after the Conference, it is possibly the least a convenient London airport to get to Oxford.

An option could be reserving online a private car service (taxi or cab) or renting a car. The journey by car takes approx. 120 minutes.

BY TRAIN

You can easily reach Oxford by train from different locations in the UK.

In particular, trains from London Paddington or London Marylebone run regularly and the journey takes between 55 and 75 minutes.

Timetables and routes are available here: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/plan-a-journey/ or here https://www.thetrainline.com

BY BUS/COACH

Oxford is well connected to London also by a regular bus/coach service, called The Oxford Tube (https://www.oxfordtube.com/).

It runs from/to different locations in Central London (e.g. Victoria Coach Station, Marble Arch, Notting Hill, and Shepard Bush) and it stops at different places in Oxford, including just outside the Conference location (Oxford Brookes University, Headington Campus).

In most cases, it is a cheaper option compared to the train from London. The journey can take, depending on traffic and pick up/drop off location, between 80 and 120 minutes.

BY CAR

Renting a car from the airport or arriving by car from another UK location could be a good option.

However, if you like to stay in/around central Oxford, parking for non-residents is extremely restricted, likewise traffic in town. There is no parking space available on or around the Conference location (Oxford Brookes University, Headington Campus).
